Fenwick Dining
A stunning new rooftop attraction will open at Fenwick in Newcastle this Saturday, offering customers a unique dining and cocktail bar experience.
Roof Thirty Nine will see the city 's historic department store take alfresco dining to a whole new level as it unveils its never-before-seen fourth floor.
Overlooking Northumberland Street - where the store's address is number 39 - the restaurant and bar will be open, weather dependent, from this Saturday, May 29 for walk-ins only.
Embracing fresh air, and hopefully some summer sunshine, the rooftop venue will feature fragrant herbs and flowers and seasonal food with a menu ranging from charcoal-fired dishes to cocktails muddled with its own home-grown botanicals.
Classic British summertime dishes including grilled meat, fish and vegetables will be cooked over hot coals and complemented by a selection of salads and sides.
Those just wanting a snack with a mid-afternoon drink could pick from the likes of charcuterie, fresh crab on toast and charcoal-grilled flat bread with labneh and dukkha.
Roof Thirty Nine has teamed up on its cocktail menu with Hepple Spirits - which in 2018 took over the famous Fenwick window to offer a one-off gin experience - and the company's Nick Strangeway has created new tastes using the botanicals and herbs grown on Fenwick's roof.
The restaurant will serve early morning coffees, light lunches, a children's menu, afternoon drinks, evening meals and 'sundowners'.
Kieran McBride, Fenwick store director, said: "We're absolutely delighted to unveil our brand-new rooftop dining experience Roof Thirty Nine.
"This is the first time we have ever opened up this part of the roof and, with its east-facing location and views across Northumberland Street, visitors can enjoy a truly unique view and an alfresco dining experience like no other in the city."
He added: "We look forward to welcoming our first customers this weekend."
Roof Thirty Nine will have strict Covid safety measures in place, including socially-distanced tables, facemask rules, a one-way system, use of the track-and-trace app and menus which are either sanitised or disposable.
Hosts will welcome and escort customers from the store's ground floor entrance, by the florist. Table sizes will be limited to six people or, if there are two households, to a maximum of 10.
Opening hours at Roof Thirty Nine will be daily from 10am (11am Sundays) with last admission at 6pm from Monday to Wednesday; 8pm on Thursday to Saturday and 5pm on Sunday. This however will be weather-dependent so customers are advised to check Fenwick's social media accounts for possible updates ahead of making a visit.
The venue will be closed for three days, from June 14-16, for the installation of an all-weather awning and will reopen on June. For more information about the new venue see here.
